Our Story

In 1909, Leopold Levinsohn opened a firm specializing in graphic design and shop window display. Along with Elkan, (info unknown), the firm eventually developed into an art school and published two books on the subjects of window display and typography.

Today, Elkan & Levinsohn is led by Adam Thabo, great-grandson of Leopold Levinsohn, an exhibition designer working in the Fine-art and Scenic industries for over 30 years.

Adam Thabo

Adam Thabo received a Master’s Degree in Innovation Design Engineering from the Royal College of Art and a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from the Imperial College of London. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Print-making from the Rhode Island School of Design and has extensive experience in fine-art photography, (photogravure and alternative processes.) He has designed, built and installed exhibitions and art pieces in some of the world’s finest Art Museums and cultural Institutions.

Leopold Levinsohn

This archive and effort to revive and renew the firm’s name is a hope to rekindle a connection with the history of Adam Thabo’s great-grandfather but also the lively art community that was based in Berlin, Germany. This story is a personal story about the art of making, but it is also a testament to creativity lost to a great tragedy.

We aim to let the story inspire our work.
